Introduction to Hydrometrics and ACDP Surf Bee Demonstration @ Red River at James Avenue Pumping Station – 05OJ015.
Description: Stage measurements are a critical and foundational aspect of hydrometrics but are often overlooked. This workshop will set the stage for good hydrometric data. The morning session will focus on the data collection components during a standard hydrometric field visit. Come join the Winnipeg’s Water Survey of Canada staff as they complete a field visit and showcase the hydrometric station.
The field portion will include completing level circuits, conducting a validating two peg test, and comparing manual water levels to data logger readings. Discussions at the hydrometric station will include tips on how to set up benchmark reference points for efficient water level validation in the field; How and when to apply sensor and gauge corrections in data review. In addition, a live stream demonstration of the Surf Bee will be conducted during the field portion with data review to follow during the classroom portion.
Classroom topics and case studies will include:
• Knowing your sensor type and how to conduct pre-deployment stage quality validations • Discussion around the various types of stage monitoring equipment currently available • A peer review of the hydrometric field data collected during the field portion, including both stage, discharge, and rating curve review • Lastly we will showcase the complex stage-discharge rating curve for the Red River at Selkirk as a preamble for the Friday workshop as this monitoring location gets backwaters by Lake Winnipeg
